Summary
The Hospital Home Team is facing a cut of the
front line nurses who have been providing patient care to over 500 chronically
ill patients at the comfort of the patient’s home. The main issue that arises
is that the Hospital failed to inform the nurses of the intended shut down. The
nurses learned through media reports as they did not receive any notice. The
cutting of the program also presents a scenario where the nurses will have
their jobs terminated without notice. The employer must give its employee a
notice of termination and give credible reasons for the termination. The nurses, through their union, feel that
the management chose to shut down the program as it was the most convenient way
for the hospital to attain its target savings as directed by Winnipeg Regional
Heal Authority.
Analysis in Industrial Relations
Context
Effective
industrial relations is about establishing and maintaining a healthy
labor-management relation. It is clear
that the management at the Hospital and the nurses have a
misunderstanding. The termination of the
front-line program is bound to leave the nurses without employment yet the
management intends not to absorb the nurses.
There is likely to be an industrial strife with the way the shutting
down of the program was conducted.
Effective industrial relations call for the engagement of all parties
before making a critical decision. The management should have consulted with
the nurse’s representative on the impending shut-down. The nurses and the
management would have charted a way forward for the nurses who would have been
affected by the closure (Sharma, 2016).
The current move by the management of the facility is bound to affect
the relationship between the workers and the management. Other employees are
likely to feel that they would experience a similar fate if the time ever
comes.
