General education aims at connecting in
an explicit manner what students learn to life beyond school and help them to
understand and also appreciate the complexities of the world and also their
role in it. General education courses are important for students because it
normally help produce well-rounded students. It is necessary for students to
take general education courses because it helps in developing basic skills such
as thinking creatively, problem-solving, and the ability to work with others
(Strecker, 2011). These are some of the abilities that students cannot pick up
in a major rather than another. They are general, and hence students will start
picking them up in their general education courses. The basic skills are essential, and it is
only possible for students to pick them from the general education courses.
These are skills that future employer’s value and will also help the student
throughout their academic careers.
Another reason students should take
general education courses is that they help to develop in the student, the
skills needed for success in their higher level and more intense courses. They
are the major, core, and concentration courses of the degree. The skills
necessary to succeed in the major, core, and concentration courses developed in
the general courses of the degree (Strecker, 2011). For example, before a
student expects to succeed in his major; he must develop the writing skills
demanded of the upper-level courses.
General education courses are also
important for students because it helps to develop a strong foundation for
lifelong learning. Students should consider taking the courses because the can
apply the knowledge and the skills they acquire from the course to any major
(Strecker, 2011). It is important to know that it is the general education
experience that tends to prepare people to make a great contribution to the
community, the world, and nation.
Lesson learned
In the history classes, I learned a lot
about history which goes beyond the places, names, and dates. Something I
learned in history is that there is very little that has changed. In history, I
learned about the different revolutions including the American Revolution,
Protestant revolution, Russian revolution, and the French revolution (Stearns,
2009). Based on history, these are the major turning points in the human
progress and evolution. However, when looking at the fundamental concepts of
how the ruled and the rulers behaved, there tends to be very little difference.
The power, privilege, and sense of entitlement of the old elite are very
different from the power, privilege, and sense of entitlement of today’s
wealthy elite. The landed aristocrats did enjoy power and extra income through
controlling land while today’s capitalists enjoy extra income and power through
controlling money.
Something I learn in philosophy is the
90/10 principle. According to the principle, 10% of life is what happens to us,
and 90% of life is as a result of how we react. Thus, we do not have control
over the 10% that happens. For example, we cannot stop the driver from cutting
us off in traffic. However, we tend to determine the other 90%. For instance,
when a person says something negative about you, you should not allow the
negative comment affect you and reacting properly to the comment may not ruin
your day. However, a wrong reaction can result in you getting stressed or even
being fired.
