Internet of Things


The Internet of things refers to the system of interrelated mechanical, computing devices as well as digital objects, machines, animals’ people that are supplied with unique identifiers. Additionally, it refers to the ability to transfer data over a network that requires human to human or human to computer interactions. The internet of things concept is one of the concepts that not only have the potential to impact the manner in which live but how we carry out our duties (Xia, Yang, Wang & Vinel, 2012).  It is the connecting of any device with an on as well as off switch to the Internet or each other.
Some of the industries that have the greatest likelihood of adopting the internet of things include the automotive industry whereby the adoption of IoT turns the car into an actionable insight in the context of the inside as well as the world around the car. On the energy industry, the adoption of IoT allows the numerous devices on the power grade to share information in real time, thus distributing energy more efficiently as well as improve the management energy (Kopetz, 2011). The healthcare industry will benefit from the adoption of IoT in that through technologies as the wearables connected to the first responders as well as the sophisticated surgical suite equipment; the IoT offers great potential in promoting the industry via guaranteeing patient safety (Kopetz, 2011).
The challenges that revolve around the adoption of IoT include the fact that there is the concern over patients’ privacy when handling the information as well as the interoperability of the data by the diverse devices. There is also the need for universal standards and protocols that will guide the development of smart technologies used in IoT. Storage of the information on these devices is additionally an issue with IoT as there is the increasing need to store the surge of information collected and for longer durations (Wortmann & Flüchter, 2015).
