"Annie
get your Gun" is a musical whose subtext is equality. Annie proves that
anything that a man can excel at, she can excel in it too. Annie proves she has excellent shooting
skills and by the second act she has won several sharpshooting medals. The composer of the musical is Irving Berlin,
a renowned composer, and lyricists of America. Irving was born in 1888 and
wrote many musical hits by the time he turned thirty. Irving took over as the composer of “Annie
get your Gun” when the former composer and his friend Jerome Kern died. Annie is not a feminist but a woman with a
different approach to life. Annie loves
to shoot because it what comes naturally.
She
is a brilliant shooter because she is natural at it and not because she is
determined to prove that she can compete and win in a male-dominated
environment. She is rough and naïve but
quick to be smitten by the charms of Frank.
She puts her best act on display but is willing to follow Frank wherever
he goes. For instance, when she wins the shooting contests, she joins Frank's
group although she has no knowledge of the world of show business. Similarly,
at the end of act two, she deliberately loses the second shooting match with
Frank so that she does not lose Frank’s ego.
Annie comes off as different compared to other women in the town, but
she is still aware of her responsibility.
For instance, she sings her siblings a lullaby so as to get them to
sleep.
