Parent’s Handout

Parents’ Handout on how to improve literacy level for kindergarten students
There is need to have an inclusive program by all the major stakeholders to ensure that kindergarten students acquire helpful literacy skills. According to Swick (2009), early childhood family literacy programs help to enhance the literacy skills of all the family members. The same is reiterated by Steiner (2014) who reported that parents and teachers participation results to major differences in the student’s scores.

Reading instructions for parents to enhance the literacy skills of kindergarten students
Reading story books and newspaper stories together: Parents who read interesting stories from books and newspaper with a child imparts the reading skills directly which makes them better readers in school.
Engaging in reading contests with the children with rewards: Parents can encourage their children to read by promising them certain rewards if they do better than other siblings during a reading contest.
Allowing children to read loudly upon close supervision and correcting them where challenges occur. The parent can keep track on the child’s progress by allowing them to read alone, but being quick to correct them till they make it.

Writing instructions for parents to enhance the literacy skills of kindergarten students
Ø  Engaging the child in working out a family related story: The parent can prepare a book to compose a family story and have the names and work of the family members on separate pages. The parent and the child can work together to draw pictures relating to what each family member does.
Ø  Creating a chart having common names for the child to copy: The parent can have a chart with common names and beneath them have a blank space for the child to repeat them . With time, he/she acquires the writing skills.
