Women’s place in
the world has been one of the hotly debated topics all around the world. Of
particular interest is women’s involvement in politics, the impact of politics
on women and the issues around political equality. For many decades now,
politics has considerably been seen as a male-dominated field requiring male
characteristics so as to succeed. One of the greatest limitations for women in
politics was the financial aspect. However, the status of women in politics has
since changed as many women have become political actors holding and vying for
top positions such as presidents, vice presidents and prime ministers all
around the world. For instance, in the US in 2013, 20 women had been sworn in
the Senate and 78 women in the House of Representatives, which was the top
number as compared to previous generations. Unlike previous generations were
running for Congress and governing the nation was exclusively left for men,
women today have been claiming an own voice in American politics. Women are
also getting involved in massive numbers in social movements and political
parties. The role of women was changing significantly not only in the political
arena but also at home and in the workplace. Despite the increasing involvement
of women in politics, they still faced various challenges such as women
underrepresentation and also that their agendas took long to be passed in the
Senate.
The film “PBS
Makers Volume 2 6of 6 Women in Politics” is crucial in highlighting the
achievements of women in politics as well as the tremendous changes in the
political arena. The film highlights significant challenges facing women in
politics that include money for campaigns and also sexual harassment. Women in
politics also suffered attacks such as the attacks on Republican vice president
nominee, Sarah. Women in political positions have provided excellent leadership
and also transformed governance such as in the scenario in which government had
been shut down, but women spearheaded for a solution. The tremendous
achievements of women occupying top positions in governments demonstrated the
breakthroughs of women in politics as well as the women’s’ urge to contribute
to change in governance and leadership.
