It
is not ethical for Betty who is a hard working
and devoted employee to lie to her employer that she
was caught in traffic making get
to work late when in the real
sense she had
overslept. She even volunteers to work overtime in
case of emergencies but in this one occasion she decides to lie to the employer
Workplace ethics dictates how employees behave
in workplaces and how they interact with employers and other
employees (Amico, 2013) These
ethics also dictates the behaviors
and accountability of individuals. In the case of Betty, it was ethically wrong to lie to her employer about her lateness. Integrity is a primary component of workplace ethics, and each
employer has an obligation to
provide truthful and credible information
to any party involved. In her case, Betty lacked integrity in that she lied
she was caught up in traffic when the
truth was that
she had overslept. She should have been
more honest by informing her employer that she had
overslept, but she was sorry
and promise never to be late again.
This way she
could have portrayed integrity of the highest
order.
Similarly,
Betty lacked accountability
in that she could oversleep and come
to work late. Accountability is another component of workplace ethics that requires employees to take responsibility of any of their actions (Giraffe,
2011). Employees who are accountable come to work as scheduled and put
genuine effort while carrying out their duties. In addition, accountable employees are honest when things
go wrong, and
they work towards resolving the problem
while maintaining
professionalism. Betty on her part was
not accountable as she failed to accept that
she had failed
to wake up early.
