How I learned English

I am 21 years old from Saudi Arabia. One year ago I enrolled at Kaplan School of English in Washington State. My reason for enrolling at this English school was to get the amazing opportunity of learning English which is an international language. I believe that by learning English, I will have many open opportunities waiting for me in any part of the globe. I am also able to study a range of skills such as how to write in a creative way. I also get to learn the history and the culture of the English language. Studying English also involve any use of words. I will have the opportunity to study the English language in its wide range of forms such as in advertising materials, in casual spoken conversations, for medical and legal discourse and written short text messages. Studying the language gives me a chance to understand its historical development over the periods and cultures. Therefore I get engaged in understanding the English language evolution from its early beginnings of the Anglo-Saxon to its current global used and varieties in the present world.
The courses also enable me to study the functions and use of language such as in political speeches and within the classroom context. I also get to learn how young children get to acquire language and the way the human mind works in processing metaphors. The English course teaches me on how to analyze language at various levels. It involves studying the smallest forms of a written language such as word formation, phonetic alphabet and the history of word meanings. I get to learn about the formal uses of grammar and pronunciations of words, the discourse patterns, dialect change and variations and matters relating to meaning and logic in aspects like jokes and metaphors.
Why English is an interesting language
When I compare English to other languages, English is much simpler to learn, and this justifies the reason why it is the most spoken language around the globe. One in every five people does understand and can speak the English language. English is also the language used in computers aviation, science, tourism, and diplomacy. That means by knowing English I can increase my chances of finding a job in any multinational company even in my home country in Saudi Arabia or anywhere abroad. English is the official language for fifty-three nations of the world. It is also the first language for over 400 million people in the world. English is also the language of the media industry such as TV shows films, songs and other interesting books and magazines. English is also the standard language of the Internet. Many websites have been written in English. Therefore I believe that studying English will not just be useful to me but having knowledge in this language will give a lot of satisfaction as I go on to perfect my English language use.
 Where did I learn English?
I had to study the English language because many countries speak this language, and there are several schools in the world offering programs in the English language. That means that if am I able to speak and write English I will have lots of opportunities in finding the most appropriate school as well as courses that fits academic needs. I also find learning English to be fun, and I get a chance to study other cultures.  The experience adds value to my learning, way of life and habits in a culture that is different from mine.
Why is the USA excellent at teaching and learning English?
The USA in an excellent nation for me to come a learn English because it well prepares students as they plan to join universities and colleges here in the United States. I have come to experience the American life as I continue to improve my English language so that I can qualify to join better universities and colleges in this countries and better opportunities after completing my course here or in my home country. The USA also has various English language programs for students to improve their English skills to the advanced level. I, therefore, plan to complete this program; to the intensive level for it will give me a higher IELTS and TOEFL score meaning that I will have more colleges and universities to choose.
 How did I learn English?
I learned English by stopping to hang out with my fellow Arabs whom we had joined this institution together because of the tendency of using our mother tongue. I had to frequently interact with people who knew English either as their native or second language. My teacher was also strict because she forced us to speak English both in and outside the classroom. In doing so, she aimed at making us use the English language as humans in need to communicate and not as a list of rules. I, therefore, did not learn the English language in the traditional way of using my mother tongue in understanding the English language l. Learning English for me was therefore through the use of English language full time and not on an occasional basis.
 Who taught me English?
The ESL teachers from Kaplan English School are the ones who taught me the English language. She emphasized on the full-time use of English even when we made mistakes. She was very encouraging in enabling us to know that we get to add more and more vocabularies in our sentences with each passing day, and this encouraged me a lot. In learning grammar, the teachers did not use the tabular form and also hardly used technical terminologies. She always explained to us grammar using examples. Thus she made grammar lessons to be very interesting as we are taught in a communicative context. Also, other ESL teachers had to do away with the common classroom setting and turned it into a game. It made me enjoy participating in board games, puzzles, dances, blackboard, competitions, and other interesting assignments and activities. These teachers have given me positive feedbacks that kept on encouraging me to put more effort.
 My goal of learning English
My goal is to perfect my English to the advanced level. I also aim to attain an IELTS Band 7.0 for spoken English and to be fluent in giving presentations in all English work and other courses that I will undertake in college. Learning English will also help me attain my goal of improving my pronunciations, attaining a wide range of spoken vocabulary, improve my academic writing skills, understand and use a wide range of English idioms. I also aim to use English in a competent manner in business and social contexts and use more English phrasal verbs.
 My experience about learning English
I have enjoyed learning English at Kaplan School of English in the past on year. The learning experience has been filled with fun ad also in-depth acquisition of new vocabularies, grammar skills, and fluency in both written and spoken English. The English teachers have also given us a personal touch in examining what we do over our shoulders and giving us criticism. Also, these teachers showed their personal involvement in classroom activities such as joining us in sit don groups, games and giving us encouragements by pat on our backs. Therefore my personal journey of learning English has been one interesting journey because I have had the opportunity to share my minimal English knowledge with my fellow students and seen this knowledge grow on a daily basis. Studying English in the United States has also given me to learn a new culture, get to interact with new friends who have corrected me in my English language mistakes and given me the encouragement and support that I need. I believe that my experience in English learning has never ended but one in its beginning stages. I still aim to fulfill my goals and to attain the advanced level in the English language.
