Ibn Rushd is known as the most important of all the
Islamic philosophers. He was born in 1128 A.D in Cordova where his father and
grandfather worked as judges. His grandfather was the Imam of the Jamia Mosque
Cordova. Ibn Rushd studied philosophy and law as well as medicine in different
institutions. He made significant contributions to philosophy, logic, medicine,
music, and jurisprudence. He shed light on various aspects of medicine that
include diagnoses, cure, and prevention of certain diseases. In philosophy,
many Muslim scholars criticized his work though it had a significant influence
on the European’s perceptions until the onset of modern philosophy and
experimental science. He postulated the views on fate and claimed that man does
not have a full control of his destiny, and it is not fully predetermined for
him. He composed three commentaries on the work by Aristotle in Arabic
translations.
The common theme throughout his writings is that there
lacks incompatibility between religion and philosophy upon having a clear
understanding of both. His contribution to philosophy apart from the
commentaries on Aristotle included the defense of philosophy attack to the
critics in Islam and the development of a form of Aristotelianism that cleaned
it. Most of his work is creative and also controversial that generated powerful
arguments amongst his Jewish and Christian philosophical successors. According
to him, there exist two forms of truths; one religious, and the other
philosophical and that it is not necessary to consider the directions that they
head. He doubts the possibility of immortality or God having the ability to
know that certain events occurred. He suggests that religion suffers an
inferiority complex from philosophy as a method of attaining knowledge.
According to him, the understanding of religion to a common man is different
from then available to a philosopher.
